As the number of children on drugs rises in Arkansas, the state lacks funding to treat all of them.

Youthbridge, in Fayetteville, Arkansas is one of only three residential drug programs statewide. It treats 12 kids at a time. Kids live there for about six months while they get counseling and an education.

"These kids have an inner beauty inside of them and drugs have taken that away from them. What we try to do here is let them see that beauty again by helping them stay clean and sober, so we can empower them to grow and succeed in life," said Saima Chauhan, Substance Abuse Coordinator at Youthbridge.

"If I would have went to seeing an out-patient counselor there is no way I could have stayed away from my friends long enough to get clean and not want to use anymore. I've seen where the drugs and using have gotten me and what precious time was taken away from me and my family, and I don't need to use anymore," said a 15-year-old who has been in Youthbridge's substance abuse program for about four months .

The teen began abusing drugs at age 12. "I want to go to college and be a mechanic and run my pop's shop."

The kids in Youthbridge's substance abuse program are referred from a judge. Those who are not lucky enough to go through a substance abuse program might continue abusing, possibly affecting their children's lives later on.

"Often times I see kids that maybe I prosecuted 15 years ago and maybe they had a drug problem then and now they are having babies and are hooked on methamphetamine. They are not taking care of their children, they are mal-nourished, molested by others coming to the home to do drugs," said Washington County, Arkansas Circuit Judge Stacy Zimmerman.

Sociologists say each person influences 12 to 24 others in a lifetime. "Now think about it if our program was not here and each of these kids helped harm or destroy 12 to 24 other lives and those people in turn became dysfunctional and harmed others," said Bud Troutner with Youthbridge.

Youthbridge says it costs about $25,000 dollars a year to treat a teen, but it costs taxpayers about $1,000,000 dollars over the lifetime of an adult offender.

Youthbridge can always use donations, but the bottom line is helping. A little bit of your time can change the life of a child. To volunteer call Youthbridge at (479) 521-1532.
